This year marks a memorable and exciting time for cricket in the local community, with the Jordan Springs Cricket Club beginning it’s first official season in the Penrith junior and senior competitions this month.

The club already has 35 active juniors and more than 50 active seniors registered for the upcoming season. There will be two junior teams, Under 10’s and Under 11’s, in the Penrith Junior Cricket Association (PJCA) competition, whilst there will be two senior teams, the first in 3rd or 4th grade and the second in 5th or 6th grade, in the Nepean District Cricket Association (NDCA) competition.

They also play in two forms of games for seniors which include Sunday fun games, where their team plays T20 matches against other club teams that is not in a competition. The other form is a team that they have that participates in grade level one day match tournaments and competitions.

“When forming the Jordan Springs Cricket Club, my first goal was to start with the junior teams first. However, what I did was to gather their Dads first, so the senior teams were started in December last year. In February, we then started the junior teams, from the age groups of 5-11 years in Jordan Springs and Ropes Crossing” said Jordan Springs Cricket Club’s Sunil Chhabra.

“This club is for everyone. We are a not-for-profit organisation and are fully affiliated for both our junior and senior teams. The club is run by donations and sponsorships we get. We have volunteers working with me from Jordan Springs and Ropes Crossing and we work for the club and the community and not for money” explained Sunil.

The cricket club hope to have a home ground in Jordan Springs within a year. For now, the junior players (from ages 5-13) practice at Village Oval in Jordan Springs on a temporary pitch every Sunday from 4:00pm till 5:00pm. The senior players practice at Jamison Park in Penrith every Saturday from 8:00am.

Future plans for the club include expanding the age group from 5-13 years to 5-16 years and to appoint a Level 2 Coach. They also hope to play softball in local competitions as well.

“What I’m looking forward to the most about our first season is watching our teams practice hard as they prepare for their upcoming district competitions. We can’t wait to see what our teams will bring home for Jordan Springs and Ropes Crossing” smiled Sunil.
